What bufferbloat looks like in games
Bufferbloat happens when packets wait in a queue inside the modem, router or ISP equipment. The connection still has bandwidth, but game packets are delayed behind uploads, downloads, streams or cloud sync. The result is sudden ping spikes, delayed inputs, rubber-banding and voice chat instability while someone else uses the connection.

How to test it
- Run a baseline PingKiller Live Test with the home connection idle.
- Start an upload, cloud backup, stream or video call.
- Run the same test again and compare worst spike and jitter.
- Run Waveform Bufferbloat Test and record the grade/result.
- If latency rises sharply under load, solve queues before changing DNS or buying a route optimizer.
Fix order
- Pause background upload tasks during ranked games.
- Set upload and download limits in game launchers.
- Enable SQM, Smart Queue Management or QoS if your router supports it.
- Set bandwidth limits slightly below real measured speeds, not advertised plan speeds.
- Retest during the same busy-home scenario.
A route optimizer can improve the path after packets leave your network. Bufferbloat delays packets before they leave. That is why the local queue must be fixed first.
